Helping one person makes an infinite difference. I learned that years ago when I started sharing my own recovery. To this day, I know that offering help to those who deal with OCD every day, not only gives them hope – but me too. I am one of you. It’s never hopelessness

OCD 101. Class one. I retired from teaching college about two years ago after 37 years. So forgive me for the 101 thing. It’s kind of a habit. I never liked complexity so I tried to teach simply - even if the subject was complex. Ok here goes. What are the basics to know about this disorder? 1. You are NOT crazy or out of touch with reality. A processing part of your brain is out of balance. The disorder is neurobiological. That means it isn’t your fault and you can do something about it. 2. We all suffer with anxiety. It is an anxiety disorder. Anxiety…well, let me put it in clinical terms - sucks! But, we can manage it with ERP, CBT, medication, meditation and/or mindfulness. 3. You and I can have a life in spite of the disorder. Truly. It takes some education and daily work but, never ever believe that it is hopeless. There’s lots of hope to be had but you have to participate. It’s called, short-term discomfort for long-term comfort. I’m not going to lie to you , it is going to be tough for awhile but never hopeless. Get help and support, even online and work at not being afraid of facing fears, we all do it daily it’s part of the job of getting better. There are no tests in my class OCD 101 - only compassion.
